Ausgezeichnete Gestaltung

“If one … realizes how important time is in creating art then one becomes very thoughtful. Time is a factor of the creative process. It all has to do with time. By the way, what time is it?” Alfred Hrdlicka

Reddot Design Award

Red dot design award

With more than 14,000 entries from over 70 countries the red dot design award is the world’s largest design competition. Only those are honored who can hold their own with the star-studded jury – in their field, with their ideas. The internationally selected jury bases their selection on such criteria as level of innovation, functionality, self-explanatory qualities or ecological compatibility. Olbrish was awarded two red dot awards in 2007: The handbag Kimono won “red dot: good design”.

The highest honor of the red dot award is the “red dot: best of the best”.
Besides Olbrish in 2007, other winners included were Apple’s iPod and Porsche’s 911 “red dot: best of the best”.
“The best products in a category, achieving the highest degree of excellence and pioneering work receive the distinction 'red dot: best of the best'. In 2007 the jury awarded this honor for the highest design qualities to the handbag Arcade, among others, created by designer Wolfgang Olbrisch. Arcade, the handbag with the curve, made of woven horsehair, received the “red dot: best of the best”.

2013 the handbag series Wave was awarded the GOOD DESIGN® USA.

German design Award

German Design Award

“The German Design Award is the highest official German award in the field of design. It is known as the “award of awards” as no other design award has such strict criteria for entries. A company may only enter the competition when its product has already been awarded a national or international prize. To participate, an additional requirement is the nomination by the Federal State commerce ministries and senators, respectively by the Ministry of Commerce and Technology.”(BMfW)

We are very pleased with the numerous awards:

2007 two of our products were nominated: the shoulder bag Arcade and Kimono.
2008 once again the handbag Kimono, which also received the GOOD Design USA that year.
2011 the handbag series Vela was nominated for the German Design Award.
2015 the handbag series Wave won the German Design Award Special Mention.

Focus Open Design Award

Focus Open

“Every year the Design Center Stuttgart awards the international design prize of Baden-Württemberg “Focus Open”. This state award is given to manufacturers and trend-setting designers, (…) for outstanding projects and design services. The awards given are “Focus in Gold” and respectively, “Focus in Silver”. They represent the coveted acknowledgement for the highest design qualities. The Focus themes are changed annually. It is a tough challenge for the competitors. The

competition has a long tradition and enjoys international reputation.” (Wikipedia)
The handbag series of woven horsehair Vela was awarded the Focus Open in Silver 2009.
The shape of the Vela was inspired by a sail. No side is identical to the other. The lightly rounded ergonomic shape fits pleasantly, hugging the side of the hip.
The handbag series Wave won the Focus Open Gold in 2011. The jury’s justification:
“Elegant, timeless, durable. Due to the geometry of the outer form there is only one possibility for holding it as the strap is on a diagonal. We find that amazing. This is something innovative and functionally justified in this relatively normal handbag sector. Finally a shoulder bag that is not always slipping off with a second strap.”

Hessen State Price

Hessen State Prize

The Hessen State Prize for German arts and crafts is one of the most important for German arts and crafts. It is awarded to artisans who are distinguished by the excellence of their handiwork and artistic creativity. We have the ambition – and not just for the present – but to develop a bag for you and your everyday life that is both esthetically pleasing and practical to use. Therefore we were all the more pleased about receiving the Hessen State Prize in 2010: The Hessen State Prize for German

Arts and Crafts 2010 was awarded Wolfgang Olbrisch as a special distinction for years of continued excellence in design.

Bochum Design Prize

Small but excellent.
Since 1997 the association of Bochum Design awards the design prize for the creation of especially clever everyday objects” ( We were especially pleased that we won 2nd prize as – the Ruhr region being down-to-earth as ever – the 1st prize went to bird nesting boxes from Bremen’s designer Heidhoff. Everyday life has priority. Our winner was the Vela shoulder bag for laptops and Din A4 formats, laminated with a

Schinkel horsehair pattern design from the 19th century.

The FORM exhibition at the Frankfurt Autumn trade fair Tendence is for the past 20 years the indicator for innovation and design: “The link between arts and crafts, the industry and design is revealed in the exhibition FORM from the Bundesverband Kunsthandwerk e.V. It showed juried products of exceptional qualities and imaginative designs from Tendence exhibitors. The presentation offered an overview of the key developments and innovations in the field of high quality

industrial and manufactured goods.” ( Since 1990 Olbrish has been represented every year at the FORM with at least one product, showing groundbreaking innovations for lifestyle bags. One of our first juried products for FORM in 1992 was the backpack LENZ, at that time avantgarde, today a classic. In 2010 it was awarded Gold at the Focus Open 2011 design competition and presented at FORM with the award-winning shoulder bag series WAVE.
